“I want to talk about my mom and how she sacrificed everything. I’m just so proud of her. She met someone that makes her happy and I want her to know that. I wish in my next life, I want to be her mother. The reason why is I want her to pursue nursing, and I want her to know it’s okay to choose yourself.”

Amber was born and raised in Antipolo, Rizal, in the Philippines, where she spent the first thirteen years of her life. Growing up, Amber faced numerous challenges including the painful loss of her beloved grandfather and the difficulty of being bullied in school. Her early years were marked by the absence of her parents, who sought employment overseas to support the family—her mother in Saudi Arabia and her father in Hawai‘i.

The separation from her parents during these formative years left Amber under the care of her aunt, alongside her two stepbrothers. Despite these hardships, Amber’s resilience began to take root, fortified by the comfort and support of her extended family. Her life took a significant turn when her family decided to reunite in Hawai‘i, driven by the promise of better educational opportunities and a more stable life.

The transition to Hawai‘i was not without its own set of challenges. Amber struggled with language barriers and cultural differences, finding the American educational system and social environment daunting. However, her adaptability shone through as she gradually adjusted, aided by the supportive teachers and new friends she made.

Now residing in Hawai‘i, Amber is a high school student who balances her studies with part-time work and active participation in her local church. Despite her busy schedule, she finds solace in her community and religious activities. Amber aspires to pursue a career in cosmetology and dreams of one day opening her own salon. She is also committed to making her community a better place, demonstrated by her involvement in local environmental clean-ups.

Amber’s journey from a challenging upbringing in the Philippines to her current life in Hawai‘i illustrates her strength, resilience, and determination to build a better future for herself and her family.
