“I’m trying to keep my head focused, my hair straight, and ten toes down.”

Born on November 9, 2007, in Ebeye, Marshall Islands, Charlie Jokas moved to Hawai‘i at the age of eleven. He had a lot of friends and loved playing basketball on the island. However, he had to move because his grandfather required medical treatment that wasn’t available in their home country.

The journey of his family, including his mom and older brother, to Hawai‘i involved a boat ride and multiple flights, arriving at Hawai‘i around midnight. He remembers stepping out of the airport, feeling that it marked the beginning of his new life and the need to start afresh.

After moving to Ewa Beach, Hawai‘i, he quickly began to find his footing with the help of his relatives. Adapting to life in Hawai‘i wasn’t easy. He missed his friends and the life he had known. Yet the support from his relatives in Hawai‘i helped smooth his transition. Already loving basketball, he also discovered football in Hawai‘i, a sport that fascinated him and presented new challenges and opportunities for growth.

When the COVID-19 pandemic began, his education shifted to home schooling, which was a challenging adjustment from his usual in-person classes. This experience made him somewhat shy.

His father joined them in Hawai‘i in 2022, bringing more family members together. Driven by a deep desire to make his family proud, he is committed to excelling in sports, potentially aiming for the National Football League (NFL) or the National Basketball Association (NBA). More than just achieving personal success, he hopes to elevate his family, acknowledging and repaying them for their support and sacrifices.
