We are so excited to announce starting this coming Monday, we are launching a free 2020 summer civic engagement program for youth. Our Green Card Voices Immigrant and Refugee Youth Ambassador Zaynab Abdi will be leading this. The program sponsored by\u00a0Up to Us<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0will be an interactive weekly 1 and a half-hour virtual workshop with different topics, training, and several speakers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Happy World Refugee Day from all of us here at GCV. Today is a chance for us to continue raising awareness and uplifting refugee voices such as Suud Olat who was born in a refugee camp in Kenya. He is now running for city council in Minneapolis. This day is also about educating and recognizing the efforts being made by various organizations including\u00a0CAPI USA<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Protesters marched the streets of Minneapolis demanding the defunding of the Minneapolis Police Department. The rally was organized by Black Visions<\/strong><\/a>. We followed along and listened to the messages organizers and those in attendance had to say. The City council will soon be addressing the public on their thoughts on the budget. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey spoke to those in attendance and said he does not support defunding the police.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As justice for George Floyd continues to be a fight in the state of Minnesota. Ongoing efforts in St. Paul and Minneapolis to clean up and feed people living where the protests have been happening have been going on. We went to\u00a0Indigenous Roots Cultural Arts Center<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Pimento Jamaican Kitchen<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to see how these immigrants are showing love for their city and taking care of their neighbors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nPimento Jamaican Kitchen<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in Minneapolis is collecting donations of food, baby items, hygiene products, and much more to give away to people living where the protests have been taking place. Many of the businesses on Nicollet Ave are boarded up and the community doesn’t have a place to get groceries or food.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pimento plans to bridge that gap and help out.<\/p>\n

The owner of the restaurant Tomme Beevas shared his story of how he started the business in our Green Card ENTREPRENEUR Voices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
