Chunk: Historical and Cultural Context
Yemen is a country in the Middle East, located on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. It is one of the oldest inhabited regions in the world, with a rich history of trade, culture, and civilization. Aden, where Zaynab grew up, is Yemen’s second-largest city and a major port.
In 2011, Yemen experienced a major political revolution as part of the broader Arab Spring movement. This led to years of civil war and conflict, making Yemen one of the most dangerous places in the world for civilians. Millions of Yemeni people have been displaced and forced to leave their homes because of the violence.
Many Yemeni families, like Zaynab’s, were separated by the conflict. Some fled to neighboring countries like Egypt or Jordan. Others eventually made it to the United States through the refugee and immigration system.
Somalia is a country in East Africa, in the Horn of Africa region. Many Somali families have also immigrated to Minnesota; Minneapolis has one of the largest Somali communities in the United States. Zaynab’s story connects to this broader community of East African and Arab immigrants who have built new lives in Minnesota.
TB (tuberculosis) is a serious infectious disease that affects the lungs. It is common in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, particularly in overcrowded or under-resourced conditions. Zaynab contracted TB while living in Egypt. She received treatment and recovered. Her survival and continued journey show remarkable resilience.
STEP-UP is a real youth employment program in Minneapolis that connects young people, many of them from immigrant and refugee families, to internships, job training, and career opportunities. It is one of the many programs in Minneapolis that supports new immigrants and refugees in building their futures.

Vocabulary and Definitions Handout
|
Vocabulary Word |
Definition |
Example |
Critical Question |
|
Healing |
The process of becoming whole or healthy again after experiencing physical or emotional injury—not forgetting, but rebuilding. |
Finding family, school, and community support helped Zaynab continue healing after loss, illness, and displacement. |
Can a person be healing and still be in pain at the same time? What does that look like? |
|
Trauma |
A deeply distressing or disturbing experience that can have lasting effects on a person’s mind, body, and sense of safety. |
Losing her grandmother, fleeing violence, surviving TB, and arriving alone in a new country were traumatic experiences for Zaynab. |
Is trauma only personal? Can communities experience trauma? Can systems cause trauma? |
|
Displacement |
Being forced to leave your home or country—usually due to war, natural disasters, or systemic injustice. |
Zaynab was displaced by the Yemeni civil war and political instability—she did not choose to leave. |
What is the difference between choosing to move and being forced to move? Why does that distinction matter? |
|
Belonging |
The feeling of being accepted, safe, and valued as a member of a specific group or community. |
When Zaynab found students from all over the world at her Minneapolis school, she began to feel like she belonged. |
What systems or structures make certain people feel like they belong—while making others feel they do not? |
|
Resilience |
The ability to recover from difficulties and keep going even when things are very tough—often built through community and support, not just individual strength. |
Zaynab’s resilience was not just personal—it was supported by teachers, programs like STEP-UP, and a community that welcomed her. |
Is resilience always an individual quality? Or is it also something communities create together? |
|
Advocacy |
The act of speaking up or taking action to support a cause or to help others get what they need—especially those whose voices have been silenced. |
Zaynab uses her own story to advocate for refugee and immigrant rights—turning personal experience into public action. |
What makes advocacy powerful? Who gets heard when they advocate—and who does not? |
|
Justice |
The process of ensuring people are treated fairly and that wrongs are made right—often requiring systemic change, not just individual effort. |
Zaynab’s story encourages us to think about what fairness looks like for refugees and immigrants who are rebuilding their lives in a new country. |
What responsibilities do schools, communities, and governments have to help people rebuild their lives after displacement? |

Instrucción
Día 1 – Encender: Introducción/Calentamiento
Bienvenida, agenda, anuncios, objetivo de aprendizaje (diapositiva 1)
i. Habla con un compañero y comparte (2-4 minutos)
ii.
c. Vocabulario (diapositiva 2)
i. Diapositiva 3: Afro-latinos: personas con descendientes de África
- Mirar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XmfL62xozI
- Mirar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQ9Uwq5kXY8
a. Toca a Bad Bunny “El Apagón – Aquí Vive Gente.”
f. Diapositiva 7: Parte 1: Elige un compañero
i. Lee la historia de Darío Meija ( imprimirla).
ii.
g. Diapositiva 8: Parte 2: Café mundial
