Nataliia Kuchma

Occupation: Clinical Researcher

Country of Birth: Ukraine (Sumy)

Current: Minneapolis, MN

“I started working as a clinical researcher at the University of Minnesota in the gastroenterology division. It’s close to my specialty and similar to what I did in Ukraine. I love my job and my colleagues.”

Nataliia Kuchma was born and raised in Sumy, Ukraine, a city she deeply loved and never imagined leaving. As a physician specializing in gastroenterology and a university instructor, she built a life filled with purpose, close family ties, and pride in her community. Sumy, located just 40 kilometers from the Russian border, was a place of peace where neighbors shared trust and understanding. But that peace was shattered with the outbreak of war.

In February 2022, Nataliia faced the unimaginable: leaving her home to protect her five year old daughter. The journey through West Ukraine was fraught with fear and filled with moments spent dodging rockets and navigating endless traffic as families fled. Her husband joined the army which left her with the heavy responsibility of ensuring her daughter’s safety. Eventually, Nataliia found refuge in a small Slovak town, where she experienced a brief sense of peace in a small mountain town. But even there, the propaganda of war terrified her.

Through a series of connections, Nataliia moved to the U.S. under the Uniting for Ukraine program. Settling in Minnesota, she was welcomed by Kathryn and Tom, a host family who opened their doors to her, her sister, and her daughter. Their kindness and support gave Nataliia the foundation to rebuild her life. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new country, she found work as a clinical researcher at the University of Minnesota and began the long process of re-certifying her medical degree.

Nataliia remains deeply connected to her Ukrainian roots. She dreams of one day returning home, but until then, she continues to find purpose in her work, her family, and her unwavering belief in the power of human kindness.
